The closest we get to be able to answer this question, is, I guess, found on the directors commentary track on the “Speedway Junky” DVD, where the director Nocholas Perry tells the following about Jonathan smoking in the movie.
One word about Jonathan and his cigarettes: The boy cannot smoke a cigarette.
When he showed up, to shoot, he had never touched a cigarette in his life.
He never smoked anything in his life, Jonathan.
So I remember having Jordan Brower, trying to teach him how to smoke a cigarette, when Jordan 16 years old at the time. Jonathan was also 16 by the way, when we shot this.

And you know me felling like I’m contributing to the delinquency of minors the entire time, trying to get Jonathan Taylor Thomas “smoke, inhale…” you know, all these things.
So if you notice it in the scenes, that he can never do it, you know he would smoke, he would turn red, caugh, almost pass out. So if you notice it in the scenes, you never really see him smoke.
We did it in a way, at the scene he is either taking the cigarette out of his mouth, or he’s putting it back in, or just holding it, but you never really, well he takes these bitty mini puffs, but you never ever see him smoke a cigarette, because he can’t do it.

Not that we know of, he only dated her on the show.

For now he has chosen to focus on his studies.
He has taken several guest roles in different TV-shows including “Veronica Mars” and Smallville, but there’s no news of him starring in a feature film at the moment.
What the future brings is only guessing, but cross your fingers, and we might get him back on screen.

He has last been seen in Smallville and The Simpsons.

Tim Allen has been known to have started developing a new TV-show, but there are no rumours that the show will star Jonathan, nor anyone else from Home Improvement.

This is the name he is credited with in “The Bradys”, but for “Home Improvement” he choose to change his name to Jonathan Taylor Thomas, after his brother Joel´s middle name.
